Balance conditions treatable by vestibular rehabilitation

Many people know that physical therapists can help people recover from injuries or perform better at sports. This is true, but the skillset of the physical therapists at Continuum Wellness is much broader.

One area that our physical therapists specialize in treating is vestibular conditions. Vestibular conditions cause dizziness, imbalance, double-vision, nausea and fatigue. Living with a vestibular condition is very challenging. If you suffer from a vestibular condition, you should look into vestibular rehabilitation.

Three vestibular conditions treated through vestibular rehab

The main focus of vestibular rehabilitation is to help you restore your balance and coordination. There are many exercises and techniques that make this possible.

There are many conditions and diseases that can cause balance and coordination problems. Below are a few that physical therapists work with:

  1. Vertigo — Vertigo is a dizzying sensation that makes it difficult to balance. People who have vertigo experience it differently. Some are triggered by small heights like standing at the top of a flight of stairs. Others can experience vertigo standing on flat ground.
  1. Vestibular Neuronitis — The symptoms of vestibular neuronitis are like the symptoms of vertigo. But, they are from a sudden attack instead of ongoing repetitive condition. Vestibular neuronitis is caused by inflammation of the vestibular nerve. This is the nerve that runs through your inner ear and helps you balance.
  2. Labyrinthitis — Labyrinthitis is another condition that causes inflammation of the nerves in your inner ear. This leads to imbalance and dizziness. Labyrinthitis is triggered by a cold or flu and goes away when these conditions run their course. However, some cases of labyrinthitis linger and cause ongoing problems requiring professional treatment.
