Why do I have front of the neck muscle pain?

If you have pain around the front of your neck, what’s the first thing you think of? Probably a sore throat, right? Well, what about when the pain isn’t accompanied by any other symptoms of a sore throat and feels more connected to the movement of your neck than your throat? You may have front of the neck muscle pain.

Reasons you may have front of the neck muscle pain

There are several muscles, tendons and ligaments in your neck that are vulnerable to injuries and conditions that can cause pain. If you have pain in the front of your neck that feels like it could be located in your muscles, you may have:

  • Strain — A strain occurs when you have stretched or torn a muscle. This can happen in your neck for a few different reasons, such as from repetitive stress or a traumatic injury. For example, if you sit or stand with your head constantly hunched forward, you’re straining the muscles in your neck. This can strain the muscles in the front of your neck, which can cause pain in that area.
  • Tendinitis — Tendinitis is a painful form of inflammation in your tendons that occurs because of repetitive stress. Repetitive physical activities that involve your neck muscles or shoulders can lead to the irritation of one of the tendons, which is what causes tendinitis.
  • Whiplash — A force that causes your head to rapidly move forward and then snap back can injure the ligaments, muscles and tendons in your neck. Collectively, these injuries are known as whiplash. It is commonly associated with automobile accidents because your head may continue to move forward while the rest of your body stops with the motion of the vehicle.
