  • Two physical therapy exercises for sciatica pain you should try

Two physical therapy exercises for sciatica pain you should try

A sharp pain when bending over. Burning sensations that run down your leg. Numbness in your butt, leg or foot. People experiencing these symptoms are likely dealing with a lower back issue called sciatica.

Sciatica occurs when one of your sciatic nerves is pinched or irritated. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of people who suffer from this condition. Medical research shows that up to 40% of people experience sciatica in their lifetime.

Physical therapy is one option that can help treat the symptoms of sciatica, and there are two therapeutic exercises in particular that you should try for sciatica pain.

    1. Pelvic tilt

One physical therapy exercise that’s often foundational for sciatica pain treatment plans is the pelvic tilt. The goal of this exercise is to help strengthen your abs, but it can also help you improve the posture of your lower back.

How to perform the pelvic tilt exercise

    • Lie down on the floor and bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. You can lie on a yoga mat for comfort if needed.
    • From this position, slowly pull your belly button in like you’re trying to bring it down to the floor. This should cause your lower back to straighten and your pelvis to roll toward your chest.
    • Hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds.
    • Release the tension in your abs, and rest for a few seconds.
    • Repeat these steps until you’ve done the exercise at least 10 times.

    2. Piriformis stretch

Stretching exercises can also be a part of your physical therapy plan to reduce sciatica pain. One excellent example of such an exercise is the piriformis stretch.

How to perform the piriformis stretch

    • Start by lying down flat on your back on the floor. Again, you can use a yoga mat for comfort if necessary.
    • Bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor.
    • Cross the leg that is painful so that your ankle is just above the opposite knee.
    • Place your hands behind the non-crossed leg, and slowly pull your knee up toward your chest.
    • Hold this stretch for 20 to 30 seconds.
    • Slowly lower your leg back down until your foot is on the floor.
    • Uncross your legs and rest for a few seconds, and then repeat these steps four to five times.

  • Two hip strengthening exercises to use in physical therapy

Two hip strengthening exercises to use in physical therapy

Sitting down to chat with friends. Walking to the mailbox. Bending down to grab something from a low shelf at the grocery store. All these normal daily tasks can be harder to do if you have a hip problem.

Unfortunately, far too many Americans are living with issues that cause hip pain and other symptoms. For instance, it’s estimated that more than 27 million U.S. adults have hip osteoarthritis. Physical therapy can be an excellent option for treating the pain and other symptoms of hip problems. Therapeutic exercises are one of the most common treatment techniques therapists use for hip issues, and there are two hip strengthening exercises that are often included in physical therapy plans for the hip.

    1. Clamshell exercise

Several hip strengthening exercises can add benefits to your physical therapy plan. One option that your physical therapist may show you how to do is the clamshell exercise. This exercise is intended to strengthen the gluteus medius, which helps stabilize your pelvis and hips. It can also help balance the muscles of the butt, pelvic floor, and inner and outer thigh.

How to perform the clamshell exercise

    • Lie down on the floor or a bed with your affected hip up.
    • Pull your knees up toward your chest until they’re bent at about 45 degrees.
    • Raise the top knee upward slowly while keeping your feet together.
    • Slowly lower your knee back to the starting position.
    • Repeat these steps until you’ve completed 10 to 15 repetitions; then do 10 to 15 repetitions with the other leg.
    1. Side-lying leg lift

Another physical therapy exercise that’s used to improve hip strength is the side-lying leg lift. This exercise helps build strength in the gluteus medius, and it can also help increase the strength of other hip stabilizers like the gluteus minimus and thigh muscles.

How to perform the side-lying leg lift exercise

    • Lie down on a yoga mat or a bed with your affected hip upward.
    • Keep your leg as straight as possible while slowly raising it into the air.
    • Slowly lower your leg back to the starting position.
    • Repeat these movements until you’ve done 10 to 15 repetitions. You can then repeat these steps with your other leg.

Advent Physical Therapy can help you find more hip strengthening exercises and therapy techniques

  • Four signs that you need physical therapy for sciatica pain

Four signs that you need physical therapy for sciatica pain

Dealing with any type of lower back pain can make your daily life harder. It can keep you from enjoying walks with your spouse. Bending over to load the dishwasher can become a painful activity. Even playing with your kids or grandkids can become a painful chore.

One common form of lower back pain that affects many people is sciatica. It’s estimated that up to 10% of the people currently dealing with lower back pain have sciatica. This means that more than 3 million Americans could have this condition right now. One option that can effectively treat sciatica is physical therapy, but you might not be sure if you have sciatica in the first place. Physical therapists can help you learn the signs of this common lower back issue.

These four signs show you have sciatica that requires physical therapy

Many people don’t want to seek physical therapy for sciatica unless it’s absolutely necessary. Often, this is because your life is so busy, or it could be that you’re worried about the cost of therapy.

However, there are certain sciatica signs that mean you need to seek professional therapeutic care. These signs include:

    1. Moderate to severe pain that starts in the lower back and runs through one buttock and down the back of one leg.
    1. Weakness or numbness in one side of your lower back, your leg or your foot.
    1. Pain that worsens after long periods of sitting.
    1. A “pins and needles” feeling in your leg, foot or toes.

How can physical therapy help treat your sciatica?

Physical therapy specialists offer many treatment options for this lower back issue. Typically, they’ll build you an individualized treatment plan that can include therapy methods like:

    • Astym® therapy sessions where your physical therapist uses metal tools to mobilize soft tissue
    • Therapeutic exercises to stretch and strengthen lower back muscles
    • Dry needling that can break down knots of tension in lower back muscles
    • Virtual therapy sessions where you work with your physical therapist over a secure online video connection
    • At-home care appointments in which you work with your physical therapist one-on-one in your home
