Two physical therapy methods our vertigo doctors may use to help you
Our vertigo doctors have several therapies at their disposal that may help your vertigo. However, we first want to help you improve your understanding of what vertigo is and issues that cause it.
Our team knows that vertigo is a type of dizziness where your surroundings seem to be moving around you. If you’ve ever suddenly felt like the room was spinning, then you’ve experienced vertigo. There are two causes of vertigo that our team often sees in our patients.
The first of these causes is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This condition is the result of small crystals in your inner ear breaking loose and moving into your semicircular canals. The crystals moving in these canals is what may cause you to experience vertigo. The second condition that may be causing your vertigo is Meniere’s disease. This disease is characterized by having too much fluid in your inner ear. While you do have some fluid in your inner ear, our team knows that excess fluid may upset your balance and cause you to experience vertigo.
If you have either of these inner ear conditions and are experiencing vertigo, our team can help you find physical therapies that may help you. For instance, our canalith repositioning procedure may help you if you have BPPV. Also known as the Epley maneuver, this therapy uses specific head movements that may help move problematic crystals out of your semicircular canals. For patients with Meniere’s disease, our team will use Cawthorne head exercises to help you treat your vertigo. These exercises include a series of head and eye movements that are designed to decrease nerve sensitivity. This decreased nerve sensitivity may, in turn, help to improve your vertigo.
No matter what’s causing your vertigo, our Continuum Wellness team is here to help you. We can help you determine what’s causing your dizziness, and we’ll also help you find the best treatments for your vertigo.
