Four tips for living with stiff finger joints

You just don’t realize how important your fingers are to your daily routine until one or more of them are hurt. When you have stiff finger joints, tasks that used to be simple suddenly become more difficult.

There are different reasons you may have finger pain, ranging from short-term injuries to more chronic conditions like arthritis. Regardless of the cause of your stiff finger joints, you need to learn how to adjust your life to help reduce the pain and perform simple tasks.

We hope to help by providing some tips below.

Four tips for living with stiff finger joints

  1. Exercise — Exercising is probably the last thing on your mind when you have constant pain and stiffness in your fingers. However, it may be just what you need to help reduce the pain and improve your range of motion. Stronger and more flexible muscles are better able to support and power the joints in your fingers than weak or stiff muscles.
  2. Use a brace — Wearing a hand splint can help reduce some pressure off the joints in your hands and fingers, which can help you get through more activities with less pain.
  3. Find ways to ease up your life — There are many ways to simplify your life to reduce some stress off your fingers. For example, use electric equipment in the kitchen instead of manual equipment, such as an electric blender or an electric can opener.
  4. Improve your diet — A poor diet does more than cause you to gain weight or have heart issues. It also affects your fingers. When the soft tissue and joints in your fingers cannot get enough nutrients and oxygen due to lack of blood flow, you will have increased pain and stiffness. Stop eating foods high in saturated fat, fatty proteins, processed grains or sugar. Instead, start eating more unsaturated fats, lean proteins, whole grains, and fresh, colorful fruit and vegetables.
