However, carpal tunnel syndrome doesn’t have to be as common as it is. By taking a few preventive measures, you may be able to keep carpal tunnel syndrome from affecting you.

Four tips for preventing carpal tunnel syndrome

While carpal tunnel syndrome is not always preventable due to injuries or a genetic condition, the following tips help lower your chances of developing it:

  1. Take frequent breaks from tasks — Carpal tunnel syndrome frequently develops due to prolonged strain on the wrists. Simply taking more breaks from physical activity to rest and stretch can help lower your chances of contracting carpal tunnel syndrome. For example, if you work on a computer for a living, get away from the desk to move around and stretch at least once every hour for 10 or 15 minutes.
  2. Sleep with your wrists straight — Poor sleeping posture can affect your wrists. Lie with your wrists in a straight, supported position instead of sleeping with them bent or curled up or hanging off the edge of your bed.
  3. Improve your posture — Improving your posture while typing, driving or operating heavy machinery can reduce your chances of carpal tunnel syndrome. Make sure your wrists are in a straight, supported position. For example, when typing, your keyboard should be at elbow level for your wrists to be straight out in front of you.
  4. Visit a physical therapist — Physical therapists can examine your wrists and develop a personalized treatment routine to help prevent or reduce pain from carpal tunnel syndrome. Many of their techniques involve strengthening the wrists and improving their flexibility, as well as correcting any posture issues contributing to your pain.
