Is the dull pain in my hip arthritis?

You wake up every morning, and there it is: the dull pain in your hip. The pain follows you throughout your daily activities. It’s there while you’re walking the dog. It might even make it hard for you to do your job effectively.

Dealing with hip pain effectively first requires that you know the source of your pain. It’s not uncommon for people to have some type of hip symptoms, including pain. One medical study reveals that 37 out of every 1,000 people have one or more hip symptoms annually. A physical therapist can help you learn if the dull pain in your hip is arthritis or a different chronic issue.

What other symptoms does hip arthritis cause besides dull pain in the hip?

Dull pain in the hip that flares up with activity could be a sign of hip osteoarthritis. It’s estimated that 27% of adults over 45 suffer from this condition. Hip pain alone isn’t the only sign of hip osteoarthritis. People with this condition also typically experience symptoms like:

  • Stiffness that makes the joint difficult to bend
  • Locking or sticking of the hip joint during movement
  • Popping or crackling sounds when the joint is moved
  • Pain and stiffness that are worse in the morning

People who aren’t experiencing these other symptoms are likely dealing with a different source of hip pain.

What other issues can cause dull pain in the hip?

Aside from osteoarthritis, there are several other issues that can lead to dull pain in the hip. Some of these conditions include:

  • Hip bursitis — This issue occurs when a bursa in the hip becomes inflamed. Trochanteric bursitis is when the bursa on the point of the hip is affected. Iliopsoas bursitis happens when the bursa on the inside of the hip is inflamed. Hip bursitis is often the result of repetitive movements. Trochanteric bursitis is the more common of the two. Research shows that 15% of women and 8.5% of men develop this issue in one hip.
  • Hip labral tear — Medical researchers report that up to 55% of reported cases of hip or groin pain involve a hip labral tear. The hip labrum is a strip of cartilage found around the rim of the hip socket. Tears in this cartilage can cause hip pain and other symptoms. Typically, trauma or repetitive movements lead to a tear in the hip labrum.
