What is virtual physical therapy and should I use it?

One of the most reliable methods for treating pain, stiffness and other issues that affect your body is to visit a physical therapist for treatment. Physical therapists specialize in treatments that help improve the strength of your muscles and structural support of your body to help treat painful conditions and injuries.

Sometimes, it’s not possible to visit a physical therapist for treatment when you need it. The COVID-19 pandemic or a condition that makes it dangerous to travel might keep you stuck at home. In these types of circumstances, you should try virtual physical therapy to get you the treatment you need.

What is virtual physical therapy?

Virtual physical therapy is a service that connects you and a physical therapist together through a live video call. Through this call, you can see and hear your physical therapist and they can see and hear you. This enables them to guide you visually and verbally through exercises, stretches and other treatment methods that can help you with your aches and pains.

Preparation for virtual physical therapy requires little on your part. All you need is:

  • A reliable internet connection
  • A device capable of video communication, such as a laptop, smartphone, tablet or a desktop with a web camera hooked connected to it
  • An open space in your home free of clutter and loose rugs
  • Clothing comfortable for moving around in, such as athletic shorts, a T-shirt and tennis shoes

Who should use virtual physical therapy?

Anyone who cannot leave their home due to the COVID-19 pandemic or because of their physical condition should consider virtual physical therapy. It’s also beneficial for people who need treatment but live far away from a clinic.

Virtual physical therapy can be used to treat a number of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendinitis
  • Bursitis
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Balance disorders

Virtual physical therapy can also help you recover from surgery or prepare for an upcoming procedure. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist today about pre-surgical and post-surgical rehabilitation if you’re expecting to have surgery soon.
